Art direction first

Direction first, then production.

Without an agreed visual direction, production time is spent on work that gets revised or rejected. Every engagement starts with reference gathering, a style guide, and one to two key pieces approved before full production begins. The guide defines line weight, colour palette, shading conventions, and proportion guidelines — and every artist on the project follows it.

Concept art

Visual development that settles the look of the game while it is still cheap to change your mind.

Character design & 3D modelling

Silhouettes, proportions, and topology built to read clearly in motion and hold up under close camera work.

Environment & level design

Spaces that guide the player and stay readable at the framerate your target hardware can hold.

Game UI & HUD

Interface systems that fit the world without getting in the way of the information players need.

Animation & rigging

Rigs and cycles built for the engine that plays them, not just for the render in the portfolio.

VFX & particle systems

Impact, magic, weather, and feedback effects tuned to sell the moment without flooding the frame budget.

Asset optimisation

Every asset prepared for real-time engines so it performs the way it looked in review.

Style guide creation

The written art direction a whole team can work to — so visual consistency is designed in, not policed later.

Our approach

Great in Photoshop, broken in-engine.

That is a production failure, not a rendering quirk — so we treat the engine’s constraints as part of the brief from the first asset.

01
Polygon budgets by design.

We design to the budget for your target hardware from the start — not discovered at integration. No surprises when assets hit the engine.

02
Texture atlases and draw calls.

Intelligent texture packing that reduces draw calls. LOD sets in multiple versions for different viewing distances. Engine-specific delivery for Unity or Unreal.

03
File organisation from import.

Assets delivered named, structured, and packed according to a convention your development team can use from the moment they arrive.

Animation

Movement that communicates, not just moves.

Timing and weight are what make a character feel physically real — so every cycle, rig, and transition is built to carry meaning, then documented for the team integrating it.

Character animation cycles

Idle, walk, run, attack, damage, and death — timed and weighted for physical conviction.

Skeletal animation for 2D

Built in Spine, so poses stay reusable and the rig can be re-timed without redrawing frames.

Skeletal animation for 3D

Maya and Blender rigs authored for clean deformation and dependable export into your engine.

Frame-by-frame sprite sheets

For stylised 2D where a skeletal rig would flatten the expressiveness — delivered as sprite sheets.

UI animation

Transitions and feedback in Lottie or After Effects that make the interface feel alive under the player’s hands.

Animation documentation

State machine diagrams showing which animations connect and what triggers each transition.

Serious games

Art for training, not just entertainment.

Serious games use game mechanics to engage users in learning or behaviour change in ways traditional training cannot — and the art carries more of that weight than most buyers expect.

01
Mechanics that change behaviour.Engagement comes from participation, not from watching a module play out. The art has to support that loop rather than decorate it.
02
Proven where the stakes are real. Most established in defence, healthcare, corporate compliance, and vocational skills development.
03
Low-effort visuals lose the room.Visual quality matters here for the same reason it matters in entertainment: users disengage from environments that feel low-effort.
04
Intentional beats photorealistic. The art does not need to be photorealistic — it needs to be intentional, consistent, and appropriate for the audience.

How it works

From brief to delivery.

Five stages from art direction to in-engine handover — each one with work you review before the next begins.

Dexsof team at work
01
Art Direction

We establish the visual language — colour palette, style references, and mood — before any production art is created.

02
Concept Development

Concepts for key characters, environments, and UI elements are created and approved before moving to production.

03
Asset Production

Production assets are created to the approved style guide with regular review checkpoints against quality and performance targets.

04
Optimisation

Assets are optimised for the target platform and engine — polygon counts, texture atlases, and LOD levels are all specified upfront.

05
Delivery & Integration

Assets are delivered in the required formats, integrated into the engine, and reviewed in-engine before final handover.

What clients say

Voices from the people we built for.

Dexsof rebuilt a system we'd been promised twice before. They shipped in eleven weeks what two other teams couldn't in eighteen months — and the code is the cleanest I've reviewed in a decade.

★★★★★
Genuine senior engineers. The kind who say 'we shouldn't build that' before we waste a quarter on the wrong thing.

★★★★★
We came for a 6-week prototype. Three years later they still run our core platform.
Idris Khan
Head of Engineering · Cantilever
★★★★★
The team integrated seamlessly with our in-house engineers and elevated the entire output. We shipped on time and under budget.

FAQ

Common questions.

Anything not covered here, ask us directly — we answer within 24 hours.

Do you work with specific game engines?

Unity and Unreal Engine are our primary engines. We deliver assets optimised for the target engine and can work within your existing project structure.

Can you handle both 2D and 3D art?

Yes — we have artists specialising in both. The right choice depends on your game's visual style and the platform you are targeting.

How do you handle art style consistency across a large team?

Art direction documents, style guides, and regular art reviews are standard practice. We set up the visual language at the start of the project so the full team can work to the same standard.

Can you take over art production from another studio?

Yes — we review existing assets, align to the established style guide, and continue production. We flag style inconsistencies before committing to fixes.

Have a game art project in mind?
